The device has two pressing elements (1, 2) that are movable relative to each other. A retaining area for a cable is arranged between the pressing elements, such that the cable is clamped between the pressing elements and loaded with pressing force by the pressing elements. A sensor element (4) measures diameter of the cable, and a fitting part (6) is arranged in force flow between the pressing elements. The fitting part has a contact surface (7) for contacting the cable, and designed in an exchangeable manner, where the surface has a cable-specific contour. An independent claim is also included for a method for determining transverse rigidity of a cable.
