The method involves computing the surface temperature of the catalyzer and determining the light-off temperature of the catalyzer. The conversion level of the catalyzer is determined using the surface temperature and the light-off temperature. The degree of conversion for carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons is determined. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a control device for use in engine control unit of an internal combustion engine for executing the method; and (2) a computer program product for executing the method.
