PURPOSE: A backlight unit and a liquid crystal display using the same are provided to implement accurate local dimming and design for the slim size of the liquid crystal display. CONSTITUTION: A backlight unit comprises: a first light guide plate(210); a first light source which faces the one side of the first light guide plate; a second light source which faces the other side of the first light guide plate; a second light plate(220) which is arranged below the first light guide plate; a third light source(202c) which faces the one side of the second light guide plate; and a fourth light source which faces the other side of the third light guide plate.
