Halogen-containing polymers, e.g. polymers of vinyl chloride or vinylidene chloride, or copolymers thereof with other ethylenically unsaturated monomers are stabilized with organotin compounds of formula R2Sn(OOC.CH=CHCOOR1)2 wherein R is an alkyl radical containing less than 10 carbon atoms and R1 is a substituted or unsubstituted cyclohexyl radical (see Division C2). 0.1 to 10 parts by weight of the organotin compound, which may be a single compound or a mixture of such compounds are blended with 100 parts of the halogen-containing polymer by Banbury blending, dry blending or milling. An example illustrates the improved resistance to degradation during outdoor weather of polyvinyl chloride stabilized with 3 parts per hundred of dibutyltin bis-(cyclohexyl maleate).ALSO:The invention comprises organotin compounds of formula R2Sn(OOCCH = CH.COOR1)2, wherein R is an alkyl radical containing less than 10 carbon atoms and R1 is a substituted or unsubstituted cyclohexyl radical. They are prepared from maleic acid or maleic anhydride, the appropriate dialkyltin oxide and the appropriate cyclohexanol. The cyclohexanol may be reacted with maleic anhydride in e.g. benzene, and the half acid ester formed, isolated if desired, further reacted with the dialkyltin oxide in benzene by removing water of reaction azeotropically. Specific compounds are dibutyltin bis-(cyclohexyl maleate) and dibutyltin bis-(2-methylcyclohexyl maleate). The compounds are used as stabilisers for halogen containing polymers (Division C3). |
