To reduce the smoke produced during burning, a charge comprises a layer of propellant containing an oxidizing inorganic salt between the main body of the charge and an inhibiting coating. The oxidizing salt may be an alkali metal nitrate or an alkaline earth metal nitrate, e.g. barium nitrate. A doublebase propallant consisting of nitroglycerine 37%, nitrocellulose 53À5%, nitrodiphenylamine 1À5%, organic lead salts 3%, and plasticizers 5% (all parts being by weight) is coated with the same composition containing in addition 20% barium nitrate before layers of ethylcellulose tape are applied. The charge may be formed by introducing a cylinder of thin sheet material into a mould and pouring the nitrocellulose powder into the cylinder. Nitrocellulose powder containing the oxidant is poured into the annular space around the cylinder before removal thereof and subsequent addition of a gelatinizing liquid containing nitroglycerine. Alternatively the oxidant containing layer may be formed into a sheet which is wrapped around the main body of the charge.
