<p>An apparatus for delivering breathable air to a patient throughout the patient's respiratory cycle, comprises an electric motor 10 including means for braking, a blower 12 driven by the motor 10 and delivering breathable air to the patient, a controller 14 to control the pressure of breathable air delivery to the patient between a comfort pressure and a therapeutic pressure, and a detector to detect phases of breathing during the patient's respiratory cycle. The apparatus is configured and adapted to carry out the following steps. First during inhalation, the motor 10 drives the blower 12 to deliver breathable air at said therapeutic pressure. Then when a transition or an impending transition from inhalation to exhalation is detected, at least some braking is applied to the motor 10, thereby gradually reducing the pressure of the delivered breathable air to the comfort pressure. Finally following braking, the pressure is increased from the comfort pressure to the therapeutic pressure.</p> |
