Disclosed is a self-regulating gastric band apparatus (100) for adjusting stoma size. The apparatus comprises a gastric band (110) and a band adjustment assembly (130), the adjustment assembly comprising of a sensor, a pump assembly, and a controller. The band engages the oesophagus and/or the stomach of the patient and has an expandable inner portion with a lumen for receiving fluid. The adjustment assembly is placed proximal the band, where the sensor senses a property of the band, and the controller operates the pump assembly to automatically adjust the volume of fluid in the lumen in response to the property.
