A composite manhole cover

A composite manhole cover comprising at least one reinforcing skeleton and one or more panels connected to the reinforcing skeleton is disclosed. The one or more panels are made from a lightweight material and have an upper surface which, in use, is or is part of the exposed upper surface of the manhole cover and the or each panel has one or more peripheral flanges extending downwardly from the upper surface. The reinforcing skeleton has a plurality of ribs extending outwardly from a central region to an outer periphery of the manhole cover with voids between adjacent ribs. One or more of the panels span the void(s) between adjacent ribs, and the ribs are securely attached to at least some of the adjoining peripheral flanges of the one or more panels. The manhole cover is capable of being securely placed on a collar surrounding a manhole.
