Apparatus for capturing wave energy in a body of water is disclosed. The apparatus comprises means adapted to be located below the water surface and which is responsive to wave disturbances in the body of water. A reciprocating pump, within the body of water, comprises a body defining a cavity and a piston slidably and sealingly mounted with respect to the body for reciprocal movement with respect to the cavity. The piston and the cavity cooperate to define a pumping chamber having a volume adapted to undergo expansion and contraction in response to reciprocatory movement of the piston with respect to the cavity. Within the passage is a flow passage. The flow passage has an inlet for receiving water from the body of water and an outlet for discharging the received water into the pumping chamber. Water is drawn into the pumping chamber upon volume expansion thereof and is discharged from the pumping chamber upon volume reduction thereof. The reciprocating pump is operably coupled to the means to be driven by upward movement of the means to undergo a first stroke.
