PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a separation membrane unit capable of well performing the filtration due to a cross flow filtration system by simple constitution, and a separation membrane element equipped therewith. SOLUTION: Flow channels 7 on a permeation side are provided on both sides (the upper and under sides in Fig.4C) to hold a plurality of separation membranes 1 in the direction C1 crossing the lamination direction A1 of the separation membranes 1 and the supply direction B1 of raw water at a right angle. By this constitution, the flow channels 7 on the permeation side can be formed in close vicinity to the respective separation membranes 1 on both sides in the direction C1 crossing the respective separation membranes 1 at a right angle. Accordingly, the permeated water formed in the respective separation membranes 1 can be guided to the flow channels 7 on the permeation side by simple constitution and the filtration due to the cross flow filtration system can be well performed.
