PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a valve lifter with a valve resting mechanism excelling in the ease of installation and capable of regulating the rotation of a movable piston in the circumferential direction. SOLUTION: The valve lifter includes the valve resting mechanism 14 arranged between a valve and a cam and controlling valve operation by hydraulic pressure, and the valve resting mechanism 14 has the movable piston 19, a mechanism body 14A formed with an insertion hole 27 for the insertion of the movable piston 19, and a coil spring 26 biasing the movable piston. The movable piston 19 is provided with a projection pin 23 projecting from an outer peripheral part 20, and a guide groove 18 is formed at the inner wall face 17 of the insertion hole 27 of the mechanism body 14A for guiding the projection pin 23.
