AUTOMATIC TUNER AND METHOD FOR TUNING CONTROL ELEMENT

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic tuner for use in tuning a control element in a process control network having a distributed control function. SOLUTION: The automatic tuner includes a first tuning element 66 located in a first field device 44 in which a control element 62 operates and a second tuning element 71 located in a different device 14 communicating with the first field device via a communication network. The first tuning element collects data during an automatic tuning procedure, determines a process characteristic and transmits the determined process characteristic to the second tuning element via the communication network. The second tuning element determines a new tuning parameter for the control element based on the transmitted process characteristic and sends the determined new tuning parameter to the control element via the communication network, thus re-tuning the control element.
