PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a separation membrane unit capable of preventing the damage of a separation active layer by simple constitution, and a separation membrane element equipped therewith. SOLUTION: Two separation membranes 1, which have separation active layers 4 formed thereto and are superposed one upon another so that the separation active layers 4 are opposed to each other, are provided on one side of sheet-like porous base materials 3 and folded back in a pleated state a plurality of times to alternately form folded-back parts 5 on one sides and the other sides (upper and under sides in Fig.4A) of two separation membranes 1. Since two separation membranes 1 are superposed one upon another so that the separation active layers 4 are opposed to each other, the separation active layers 4 are not exposed and the damage of them can be prevented by the simple constitution.
