A searchlight for vehicles subject to shock or sudden acceleration forces, such as armoured vehicles, comprises a housing 6 mounted on the. vehicle and containing a light source 1, e.g. a gaseous discharge lamp, and an optical system 3, e.g. a reflector forming a structural unit so that relative movement of the light source and optical system is prevented, the unit being resiliently mounted as by rubber buffers 5 in the housing. The unit consists of a casing 4 carrying the reflector 3, the lamp 1 being mounted on a sleeve 2 which is a sliding fit in the casing 4. The front of the housing 6 has a protective glass cover 10 and a lid 11 is provided at the rear for enabling the lamp to be charged. A stop adjustable from the rear by a screw and nut device 8 is provided for setting the position of the sleeve 2 within the casing 4. The front of the reflector 3 is closed by an infra-red filter 7. |
