PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To determine image density with high accuracy, in an image forming apparatus and method, in which an image is formed by developing a latent image with a liquid developer including a liquid carrier and toner. SOLUTION: Though a low-density patch image PI is primarily transferred from a photoreceptor drum 21 to an intermediate transfer member 31 on a primary transfer nip NP1y for yellow, when the low-density patch image PI passes through primary transfer nips NP1m located on the downstream side of the primary transfer nip NP1y, irregularities of the surface of the intermediate transfer member 31 are uniformized and irregularities of the toner are certainly detected and an image forming condition on the low density side is well found. Also on respective image forming stations 2M, 2C, 2K other than yellow, a fogging toner is effectively prevented from being transferred to the low-density patch image PI by controlling a bias condition during passing of the yellow low-density patch image PI through the primary transfer nip and setting a condition in which fogging scarcely occurs.
