PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To bring a camera into focus more flexibly according to the upward and downward directions of the camera, when photographing. SOLUTION: When AF control is to be conducted, a CPU 2 determines whether an imaging angle is a depression angle or an elevation angle, on the basis of an inclination angle of the photographic optical axis to a horizontal direction, with the inclination angle being detected by an angle sensor 9. When the imaging angle is a depression angle, the CPU 2 sets a focusing position-searching direction when focus adjustment is started to the shortest distance direction which is aimed at focusing on an object located on the shortest focusing distance side. Meanwhile, when the imaging angle is an elevation angle, the CPU sets the focusing position-searching direction concerned with an infinite distance direction which is aimed at focusing on an object located on an infinite-distance side. Then, the CPU conducts focus adjustment. When photographing is made in a state in which the camera directed downward, focusing is set instantaneously, not only on an object which is located at a short-distance position but also on an object which is located at a remote-distance position without troubles.
