[Also in Division C3] Novel polyesters containing -CH 2 -S- groups and consisting essentially of products of the type where R<SP>1</SP> is alkyl, R<SP>11</SP> is the residue of a dicarboxylic acid R<SP>11</SP>(COOH) 2 , x is an integer greater than 1 and A is where R is H or optionally substituted alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl and n is an integer from 2 to 8 are prepared by first heat-reacting one mole of liquid polythioformaldehyde consisting essentially of dithiols of type HS (CH 2 S) n H with 2 moles of the carbonate of an olefin R-CH=CH 2 or with a glycol mono- or di-ester corresponding to the oxide thereof, in the presence of an alkaline catalyst to form a polythiomethylene diol HO-A-OH, then heating this with a dicarboxylic acid or a dialkyl ester or anhydride thereof. The last stage is preferably effected stepwise, intermediates of types R<SP>1</SP>OOC-R<SP>11</SP>-COO-A-OH and R<SP>1</SP>-OOC-R<SP>11</SP>-COO-A-OOC-R<SP>11</SP>- COOR<SP>1</SP> being isolated. Intermediates of formula HOH 2 C-CH 2 S-(CH 2 S) 3 . 5 CH 2 CH 2 OH which is then fractionated and p-CH 3 OOCC 6 H 4 -COOCH 2 CH 2 -S(CH 2 S) 5 -CH 2 CH 2 OH are isolated in examples.
