Provided are an organic EL element and a method for producing the same, wherein a light transmissive resin substrate is used, and a complicated element structure or a plurality of members are not used; the surface of the substrate has an excellent resistance to damage; the contact between the substrate and an electrode layer, or the prevention of the occurrence of cracks in the electrode layer is improved; there is no leak (short circuit); the prevention of a dark spot and the resistance to bending are improved; and the light extraction efficiency is improved. The organic EL element wherein a transparent electrode, a light emitting layer, and an opposite electrode are stacked in series on a light transmissive base material, is characterized in that the light transmissive base material has hard coating layers containing metal-oxide nanoparticles on both sides of the light transmissive resin substrate; the transparent electrode is formed on one hard coating layer (H1); and the surface of the other hard coating layer (H2) in the light transmissive resin substrate, which is opposite to the side contacting with the light transmissive resin substrate, has an uneven structure.
