The source (1) has a target holding unit (3) for holding targets (4-7), and an adjusting unit (10) for moving the target holding unit such that the targets are movable in an electron beam (8), where temporal consecutive electron beam pulses hit at the targets. A guiding coil pair produces magnetic field for guiding the electron beam such that the electron beam pulses alternatively hit at different targets. A synchronization unit (20) synchronizes pulse frequency of the electron beam with alternating frequency of the targets. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating an X-ray source.
