The system has a horizontal lashing belt (12) for connecting loading units with a container using a lashing ring (10). The belt forms an angle with a bottom and/or a roof of the container, where the angle is varied by selection of the ring. A parameter of the system is varied within a correlation in which protection force at the ring forms a function of a loading weight, deceleration value, a frictional value, a position height of the belt, loading unit position, spacer position and belt deflection and cosine of the angle. The angle is equal to or smaller than 35 degrees. An independent claim is also included for a method for protecting loading units in a container by a modular restraint system.
