In the recovery of carbon from the product discharged from a rotary kiln used for the direct reduction of iron ore, the metallic iron is first separated out in a dry process and the residue treated with oil and introduced into water for the recovery of the carbon as a float fraction. An example is given in which iron ore is reduced in a rotary kiln using anthracite coal. After the removal of metallic iron and screening, the resulting fraction below 3 mm. is introduced into an inclined tumbling barrel and sprayed with oil through a nozzle so as to render the carbon hydrophobic. The oiltreated material is then fed with water into a series of separating vessels where it is agitated to cause the coal particles to float for subsequent removal by skimming. Preferably, the water supply is controlled to maintain a pH value over 10 and where high viscosity oils are employed, the water may be heated.</p> |
