Disclosed is an authentication system provided with an input device for placing an organism thereon, an image capturing device for capturing an image of the organism, a storage device for storing a plurality of first characteristic data each including the characteristic of the organism and preregistered, and second characteristic data generated from the respective first characteristic data, and a matching processing unit for matching an input data indicating the characteristic of the organism the image of which is captured by the image capturing device and each of the first and second characteristic data, said authentication system being characterized in that each of the second characteristic data is smaller in size than each of the first characteristic data and includes at least part of the characteristic of the organism.
