The method involves personalizing a data carrier within a radio field of a personalization device via an air interface of a telecommunication terminal in a contact less manner. The telecommunication terminal is arranged in the radio field in a fixed manner. The telecommunication terminal is inserted in a retaining device i.e. box, that is arranged within the radio field, where the retaining device is closed, during the entire personalization. The personalization device recognizes existence of the telecommunication terminal in the retaining device. An independent claim is also included for a personalization device for personalization of the portable data carrier.
