The electrode (1) has a base (2) formed from ground electrode material, and an alloy layer (3) formed from a precious metal and a part of the electrode material, where the alloy layer is melted into a region of the base. A reinforcing layer (4) is formed from another precious metal, and welded and stamped into the alloy layer. A surface of a side (5) of the ground electrode is formed by the base, the alloy and reinforcing layers, where the reinforcing layer is centrically arranged on the surface. The precious metals consist of platinum, iridium, rhodium, ruthenium, rhenium and palladium. An independent claim is also included for a method for producing a spark plug ground electrode.
