PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electronic camera whose focusing performance is improved. SOLUTION: An imaging device 16 has an imaging surface for capturing a field through a focus lens 12 and repeatedly outputs a field image. A CPU 30 calculates a relative ratio based on the high area AF evaluation value and intermediate area AF evaluation value of a field image output from the imaging device 16 in response to the half depression of a shutter button 44s. The CPU 30 defines a range of lens movement, which indicates an extent that differs according to the calculated relative ratio, and moves the focus lens 12 within the defined range of lens movement in order to search for a focal point. In addition, the CPU 30 adjusts a definition characteristic of the range of lens movement so that the characteristic differs according to the position of the focus lens 12 at a point of time that the shutter button 44s is half-depressed.
