PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To allow shading correction of image data read from an original document without being affected by illumination depth characteristics, and avoid the occurrence of a longitudinal streak in an output image. SOLUTION: A controller causes a white member to rise (move) to a position where an interval between the white member and a read surface of an image reader is narrowed, to narrow an interval between the read surface of the image reader and a surface of the white member, before causing the image reader to read the surface of the white member to generate reference white data for shading correction. Thereafter, the controller causes the white member to fall (move) to a position where the interval between the white member and the read surface of the image reader is broadened, to return the interval between the read surface of the image reader and the surface of the white member to the original state.
