The method involves detecting forthcoming and preceding vehicles in a driving direction of a vehicle with a headlight arrangement. Light distribution generated by the headlight arrangement is regulated so that headlight range is smaller than distance to the detected preceding vehicle and headlight range towards an adjacent road is switched between two illumination conditions based on detection of the forthcoming vehicle. Switching between both the illumination conditions for the headlight range towards the adjacent road is delayed based on detection rate of the forthcoming vehicles.
