In a machine tool such as a lathe means are provided for effecting fast traversing movements of the transverse and longitudinal carriages respectively, the means comprising a rotatable shaft 1 mounted, for limited pivotal movement transversely to its axis of rotation, on the apron of the longitudinal carriage 6 and which carries gears 2 and 21 which are selectively engageable with gears 3 and 22 and the respective carriages, when the shaft is pivoted. The shaft 1 is driven by a reversible motor 14 through a flexible coupling 14a and an over-running clutch mechanism 10a, 11 and 12 the drive from the motor 14 being superimposed on the normal drive from the lead screw 7 and, in the case of the longitudinal carriage 6, effected through the rack and pinion device 5 and 3. The actuation of the motor 14 is effected by a pivotable hand lever 15 which includes means 16 for selectively engaging contacts 18 and 19 depending on the direction of fast traverse required. |
