The skim stock spaced not more than 60 mils from synthetic polyamide or polyester cords or yarns used to reinforce elastomeric products, comprises 3-30% by weight of calcium oxide and 10-30% by weight of a modifier which is one or more of aluminium oxide, zinc oxide, calcium silicate and calcium aluminate. The elastomer is preferably a mixture of 45-55% by weight of natural rubber and 55-45% by weight of styrene-butadiene rubber. The skin stock preferably has a moisture content not exceeding 0.25% by weight and the construction of the elastomeric product preferably takes place in an atmosphere of relative humidity not above 20%.ALSO:The loss in strength at high temperatures of synthetic polyamide or polyester cords or yarns used to reinforce elastomeric products is reduced without causing a reduction in scorch time, modulus and cord/elastomer adhesion by incorporating into the skim stock spaced not more than 60 mils from the cords or yarns, 3-30% by weight of calcium oxide and 10-30% by weight of a modifier which is one or more of aluminium oxide, zinc oxide, calcium silicate and calcium aluminate. The elastomer is preferably a mixture of 45-55% by weight of natural rubber and 55-45% by weight of styrene-butadiene rubber. The calcium oxide and modifier may be dispersed into the skim stock, the stock calendered to form sheets, a plurality of polyamides or polyester yarns or cords parallel to each other enclosed between two sheets to form an article, e.g. a tyre, conveyer belt, drive belt or hose, and the article then cured. The skim stock preferably has a moisture content not exceeding 0.25% by weight and the construction of the elastomeric product preferably takes place in an atmosphere of relative humidity not above 20%.
