A steering device (16; 90) for an outboard engine (10) includes: a helm mechanism (42; 92) operable, in response to operation of a steering wheel (37), to steer the outboard engine and including a drive shaft (67) parallel to an output shaft (48) of the operation member; an electric assist mechanism (41) for detecting steering torque, applied to the steering wheel, to assist operation of the helm mechanism (42; 92) on the basis of the detected steering torque; and a power transmission section (44; 100; 110) for connecting the output shaft of the steering wheel and the helm mechanism to transmit rotation of the output shaft to the helm mechanism.
