Improvements in fluid flow control valves

[Also in Division G3] A fluid flow control valve comprises a housing 10, Fig. 1, having inlet and outlet flow passages 12, 14, a barrier 35 secured within the housing intermediate the flow passages, an expansible sleeve 44 in sealed communication at opposite ends thereof to the flow passages and snugly embracing the periphery of the barrier, a rigid member 50 in closely spaced relationship to the outside of the sleeve, the rigid member being mounted within the housing to provide a fluid chamber sealed from the flow passages, and means 64 for introducing a pressure fluid into the chamber. The barrier 35 forms part of a cage 30 with rectangular ports 39, 40 while the sleeve 44 has flanges 46, 47 to anchor its ends to the housing. The valve may be charged with a constant control pressure to release pressure build-up and thus function as a relief valve or the control pressure may be varied manually or by a parameter-sensing pilot system to open and close the valve. To prevent chattering, the clearance 68a is no greater than 1/ 10 and is preferably 1/ 16 of the diameter of the barrier. The number and size of holes 51 in the member 50 are chosen to provide the desired speed of valve operation. In an alternative construction, Fig. 3, the parts of the body are held in assembled relation by tie-bolts 139 and the flanges of the flexible sleeve are clamped between members 84, 96 and 114, 122, control pressure being admitted through a port 146 to a space 116.
