PURPOSE: A magnetic absolute encoder is provided to use a magnetic detection element for outputting an electric signal related to the position of saw-teeth. CONSTITUTION: A magnetic absolute encoder comprises a first rotation detector(3), an A/D conversion unit(10), and an absolute position calculation unit(14). The first rotation detector is fixed to a rotary shaft(1) and detects the rotation position of a gear using a magnetic detection element. The A/D conversion unit converts an electric signal outputted from the first rotation detector into a digital value and outputs first data corresponding to the quantity of the saw-teeth of the gear. The absolute position calculation unit detects the absolute position of the rotary shaft based on the output of the A/D conversion unit.
