The overcharging of a cell 1 3 in a battery is prevented by arranging a microswitch 8 to be operated upon by the gas evolved by the cell during charging so that upon an excess pressure being developed the contacts 5 are closed to connect a resistor 4 in parallel with the cell so reducing the charging current through the cell. The resistor 4 may have a fixed resistance or may be composed of graphite discs to which the gas pressure may be applied so that, after having been connected in parallel with the cell, the resistance is variable. The pressure-responsive means comprises a body 19 which is attached to the cell, through which body is a passage 20 so that the gas pressure in the cell can operate on a flexible membrane 6 to move a member 26 so operating the microswitch by means of its plunger 7. A spring 24 is provided to return the member 26 to its normal position and an atmospheric vent 30 is provided to eliminate excess gas pressures in the cell.</p> |
