A rotating matrix - type thermal regenerator comprises a rotating drum 18 containing heat regenerative material 40 forming a plurality of passages 38 extending parallel to the axis of rotation, two end baffles 22, 24 in peripheral sealing contact with the ends of said drum baffle 22 being stationary and baffle 24 being supported on cradle 110 (Fig. 7), to be movable in the direction of the longitudinal axis of the drum while still being kept in sealing contact with the drum (as for example by springs 120) as the drum expands and contracts during the heat exchange process. Referring to Fig. 1, combustion air for a furnace 14 enters baffle 24 at inlet 124 and is heated in the drum, passing into the furnace through outlet 82. Exhaust gases from the furnace pass into the drum at inlet 84, give up their heat to the regenerative material and leave at outlet 126 to the stack 25. The drum is rotated on rollers 52, Fig. 3, driven by motor 56, Fig. 1. To prevent exhaust gases trapped in passages 38 contaminating the combustion air, purging nozzles 142 are positioned in a central dividing wall 128 of stack-end baffle 24 and compressed air blows the exhaust gases down the passages and into inlet 84 of the furnace-end baffle 22 via L-shaped receiving passages 98, Fig. 8 (not shown). Similarly heated combustion air trapped in passages 38 is blown back into inlet 124 via receiving passages 142, Fig. 7. The rubbing seals 108 between the end baffles and the drum are made of asbestos, Fig. 3. The matrix drum comprises a steel shell 26 lined with heat-insulating material 28 and containing fire bricks 40 shaped and stacked to provide the passages 38, the bricks being cemented together and supported by an outer refractory cement lining 44. The centre passages which are not utilized for heat exchange are sealed off at their ends with plugs 42. |
