R 1>, R 2> : 1-12C alkyl (where one or two non-adjacent CH 2is optionally replaced by -O-, -CH=CH-, -CO-, -OCO- or -COO- and O atoms are not directly linked with each other), preferably 1-6C alkyl or 1-6C alkoxy; either A1-A4 : cyclohexane-1,4-diyl or substituted cyclohexane compound of formula (II); or one, two or three of A1-A4 : cyclohexane-1,4-diyl, tetrahydropyran-2,5-diyl or cyclohexene-1,4-diyl; L 1>, L 2> : H, F, Cl, OCF 3, CF 3, CH 2F, CHF 2; Z 1>- Z 3> : -COO-, -OCO-, -CF 2O-, -OCF 2-, -CH 2O-, -OCH 2-, -SCH 2-, -CH 2S-, -CH 2CH 2-, -C 2F 4-, -CH 2-CF 2-, -CF 2CH 2-, -(CH 2) z-, -CH=CH-, -CF=CF-, -CH=CF-, -CF=CH-, -CC-, -CH=CHCH 2O- or a single bond, where if m = 0, then Z 1>and Z 2>are not simultaneously a single bond; z : 3-6; and m : 0 or 1. Independent claims are also included for: (1) a liquid crystal medium comprising: (a) a polymerizable component comprising at least one polymerizable compound or (a1) a polymer obtained by the polymerization of a polymerizable component comprising at least one polymerizable compound and (b) a liquid crystalline component comprising the liquid crystal mixture; (2) a liquid crystal display comprising a liquid crystal cell consisting of two substrates, where at least one substrate is translucent and at least one substrate exhibits an electrode layer, and a layer of a liquid crystal medium comprising the polymerized component and low molecular weight component, is present between the substrates. The polymerized component is obtained by the polymerization of at least one polymerizable compound between the substrates of the liquid crystal cell in the liquid crystal medium by applying an electrical voltage and the low molecular component is the liquid crystal mixture; and (3) producing a liquid crystal display, comprising mixing the liquid crystal mixture with at least one polymerizable compound and optionally with further liquid crystalline compounds and/or additives, and filling the resulting mixture into the liquid crystal cell and polymerizing the polymerizable compound by applying an electrical voltage.
