1,026,494. Steady-rests. SIR JAMES FARMER NORTON & CO. Ltd. Oct. 18, 1963 [Oct. 25, 1962], No. 40474/62. Headings B3B and B3T. A steady which may be located before and/or after the cutting tool in a bar or tube lathe comprises an annular device surrounding the work 2, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), and including pads 1 moved hydraulically against the work. The pads 1 which may have V-shaped ribs for engaging grooves formed in the work by feedrolls, engage apertures in a sleeve 5 and recesses in a ring 7 moved, to close the pads 1, by pistons 10 against the action of return springs 13. Bevel-closing plates 8 on the ring 7 engage the ends of pad-carriers 6. An annular screw 11 between the pistons and ring 7, slides on a peg 16, Fig. 1 (not shown), projecting from the stationary piston-housing 17 to which the sleeve 5 and ring 7 are locked by a plate 20, Fig. 5 (not shown), with teeth engaging those on a collar 23. Adjustment for different work-diameter is effected by releasing the plate 20 and turning the sleeve-and-ring assembly 5, 7 relatively to the screw 11. Coolant is admitted through passages 27. |
