Apparatus for sealing and immobilizing a rotary shaft 18 passing through an opening 16 in a fluid-containing vessel so that a section 25A of the drive shaft can be disconnected and the mechanical seals 64, 65 thereof removed, comprises a deformable seal 80 and means operable from outside the vessel to move the latter to grip the shaft 18 and prevent its axial movement. The seal 80, which is mounted in a cylindrical casing 76 surrounding the shaft and preferably made of nylon or resilient plastic, is deformed on to the shaft by the pressure of grease which is injected through bores 92, 86, 90, Fig. 4 (not shown), into the annular space 79 surrounding the seal; a collar 100 on the shaft serves as a throttle to restrict fluid entering from the vessel and a further collar 104 serves to prevent axial movement of the shaft in the event of failure of the seal. The shaft 18 is connected by a key 46 and a draw-bar 44 to the removable section 25A of the drive shaft which at its upper end is connected by a coupling 54 to a vertically-movable drive shaft 25. When there is need to replace or repair the seals 64, 65 or bearings 56, 57 of the shaft section 25A. The whole assembly is removed from between the shafts 18 and 25. In removing the assembly, the shaft 18 is gripped by inflating the seal and the coupling 54 moved upwards to gain access to the nut 47 of the draw-bar; with the draw-bar and nuts 59 undone, the assembly can then be removed through an opening in the surrounding casing 28 which is made adjustable in height on jacks 36 and carries the gearing and drive-motor at its upper end. Lubricant may be circulated through the assembly via an inlet 67 and an outlet 68 in the casing 58.
