879,152. Work-holders. CRAWFORD COLLETS Ltd. Jan. 4, 1960 [July 10, 1959], No. 23718/59. Class 83 (3). A collet or like workholder 10 having jaws 10b comprises work-engaging pads 11 removably secured to the jaws by pins 12. Each pad has a collar 11a engaging a groove 10c in the jaws, and a dovetail slot 11b, the faces 11c, 11e on the collar being tapered to engage corresponding faces on the pin 12. Each pin is mounted in a recess 10d in a jaw, and is urged axially by a spring 13, the upper limit of the pin being controlled by a screw 12 in the jaw, located in a slot on the pin. In operation, the pins 12 are depressed, and the pads inserted in the collet. The pins are then released so as to be moved axially by the springs, and the dovetails are engaged, thus locking the pads in the collet bore. In a modification, the male dovetail is on the pad, and the female dovetail is on the pin. In a further modification the pins are moved axially by screws in the end of the jaws. In a still further modification the groove 10c is in the pads, and the collar 11a is in the jaws. |
