A retaining plate for a chromatographic column having a thickness between 0.0254 cm (10 thousandths of an inch) and 0.3175 (0.125 of an inch) and an effective modulus of elasticity between 27.10 6 and 32.10 6 psi with open spaces wherein the retaining plate may provide sufficient flexibility to bend when pressed into place in a chromatographic column and grip the walls of the column.
