The invention relates to a strategy for monitoring the quality of engine lubricating oil, comprising the following steps: predetermining a first (Zd) and second engine operation area (Zp), respectively corresponding to a first high risk of fuel being diluted in the oil and to a second high risk of carbon particles being present in the oil; selecting a reference distance Dref; calculating, over said reference distance adjusted to a sliding value, the percentage of the distance covered in the first and/or second area, said percentage being related to a first (Cd) and second criticality level (Cp) associated with the first and second risk; and activating an alert when at least one of said criticality levels exceeds an alert threshold appropriate to the risk in question.
