摘要 Hydroquinone is made by introducing a p-dialkylbenzene-bis-hydroperoxide in which the alkylhydroperoxy groups have the formula <FORM:1034896/C2/1> where R and R1 are alkyl groups containing from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and a primary solvent for the by-products of the reaction but not for the hydroquinone into a solution of an acid catalyst in the primary solvent or a secondary solvent for the hydroquinone, neutralizing the acid catalyst, filtering off the salt thus formed, separating the secondary solvent, if used, and ketone formed by distillation and rectification and separating the undissolved hydroquinone from the remaining solution by mechanical means. The primary solvent may be an aromatic hydrocarbon such as benzene, toluene or xylene. The secondary solvent should have a boiling point lower than that of the primary solvent. Acetone, methylethylketone, other ketones, alcohols or ethers may be used. The catalyst may be sulphuric, phosphoric, perchloric, or p-toluene-sulphonic acid, HBF4, H2SiF6 or BF3.
