[Also in Division G6] Combustible waste material contaminated with radio-active material is destroyed in afurnace the exhaust gases from which are first centrifuged to remove the larger particles and are subsequently passed through an electrostatic precipitator followed by a cloth filter. Before centrifuging the gases are sprayed with a sodium hydroxide solution and after centrifuging the gases are cooled to precipitate moisture. The ash from the furnace is swilled out with water and conveyed with the solids from the centrifuge and the moisture collected by the cooler to waste collectors. The electrostatic precipitator is shown in Fig. 4 and comprises a row of discharge wires 31 tensioned by stirrup weights 37 astride a steadying bar 38. The collecting electrodes 41, 41a, are comprised by aluminium foil sheets unwound from spools at the top of the precipitator and wound on to spools at the bottom so as to collect the precipitate for disposal with the bottom roll. The filter comprises a length of cloth 63, Fig. 8 (not shown), suppliedfrom one spool and wound onto another for disposal and threaded between alternate inlet and outlet frames 60 and 60a. The frames comprise square-sectioned pipes formed into squares with apertures along their inner edges and are clamped with the cloth sheet between them by pressure plates 58 and 59. Gas admitted through the inlet frames is passed through the cloth for extraction by the adjacent outlet frames. To allow for the cloth to be wound on the spools to provide fresh filter surfaces, the frames are mounted on springs 57 so that they release the cloth when the pressure plates 58 and 59 are released.
