The cylindrical housing for a rotary forage cutter 23 having peripheral blades 35 is formed with an arcuate bottom wall 56 which is movable from its normal operative position, as shown, in which it is secured to the end walls of the housing by shear pins 70 to an inoperative position (Fig. 4, not shown) in which the bottom of the housing is open to permit exit therethrough of a stone or like unshearable object which has been urged by a knife against the lower edge 14 of the feed mouthpiece to rupture the shear pins 70. The lower mouthpiece portion 14 serves as a counter-cutter and is secured to the movable housing bottom 56. When the pins 70 are sheared, the housing bottom 56 is projected and guided in a circular path to a position in which it underlies the top of the housing 17 and closes the outlet duct 61. The movement of the housing bottom 56 is braked by a resiliently mounted shoe 76 having a lower edge 78 forming a stop for engagement by a shoulder on the mouthpiece lower edge 14 which moves with the housing bottom 56. In an alternative brake (Figs. 5, 6, not shown) the shoe resiliently bears on a side flange of the housing bottom.
