The device has a distance displaying device i.e. magnetic tape (4), integrated into a guide rail (1), and a distance determining unit i.e. magnetoresistive sensor, fastened at an electric tool i.e. circular hand saw (2). The distance displaying unit is connected with the distance determining unit such that distance covered from a starting point to the tool residing in the guide rail in a guiding direction is visibly represented at the starting point at any time. A programmable processor unit considers a size and an immersion depth of the tool when the distance is determined.
