PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and apparatus to provide for optimal recovery of biological fluid from biological fluid processing systems, cost reduction, and ease of use, and have developed novel open and closed loop systems. SOLUTION: The biological fluid filtration system 44, in which a blood container 49 is in fluid communication with a leukocyte depletion device 45 via a first conduit 50 and the leukocyte depletion device is in fluid communication with a blood container 52 via a second conduit 54, has an upstream gas path 56 and a downstream gas path 58. At least one layer of a porous medium 67 is provided between an inlet 65 and an outlet 66 of the upstream gas path, which is located high enough so as not to contact the blood product being filtered.
