A live lathe centre adapted to withstand great thrust in the axial direction comprises a rotary shaft made up of a conical head 1, a neck 3 having a stepped portion 2 and a long body 4, a stationary sleeve 5 surrounding the body and a portion of the neck 3, there being provided needle bearings 6, 7 disposed between the rotary shaft and the sleeve 5 and a bearing ring 8 being mounted on the body 4 in such manner that the front end abuts the stepped portion 2. An annulus 10 is secured around the shaft 5 and a ball bearing 12 inserted between the annulus 10 and the rear end of the bearing ring 8. The bearing ring has a corrugated, resilient portion 9 to absorb thrust. In a modification, Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), resiliency is provided by a spring 9<SP>1</SP> which may be interposed between the rotary bearing ring 11 of the ballbearing and the rear end of the bearing ring 8 or between the stationary bearing ring 13 of the ball-bearing and the annulus 10. - A coverplate 14 is mounted on the bearing ring 8. |
