The method involves conveying a fuel into a fuel accumulator (16) by a high-pressure pump (14a) i.e. radial piston pump, and extracting the fuel from the accumulator by an injector (18a) for fuel injection. A temporal change of fuel pressure between a pressure measuring time point and a subsequent injection time point is determined using a model (200). The fuel pressure present in the accumulator is measured by a pressure sensor (17) at the measuring time point. The fuel is injected by the injector at the injection time point. An operating behavior of the pump is simulated by the model.
