PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing polyphenylene ether effectively reducing dispersion of molecular weight between reactors, and achieving a high yield, an excellent color tone, and good heat resistance. SOLUTION: The method for producing polyphenylene ether includes a process for polymerizing a phenol compound (A) having a specific structure in the presence of a benzofuran compound (B) having a specific structure.
