PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader reducing bright spots on a light irradiation surface of a document without cost increase, and thereby suppressing illuminance unevenness due to the bright spots, and also to provide an image forming apparatus equipped with the same. SOLUTION: There are provided with the image reader and the image forming apparatus equipped with the same which irradiates the document with light from a light source comprising an array of a plurality of light emitting elements in a main scanning direction and reads reflected light from the document by a photoelectric converting element. The image reader 100 including: the light source 211 comprising the array of the plurality of light emitting elements 212, ..., irradiating the document G with the light, in the main scanning direction X; and the photoelectric converting element 205 receiving the reflected light from the document G, is so configured that the amount of projection light from the light emitting elements 212, ..., is adjusted, and a state of bright spots on the light irradiation surface Gd of the document G is determined so that the amount of projection light from the light emitting elements 212, ..., is adjusted based upon a determination result of the state of the bright spots.
