PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a zwitterion including a biocompatible and haemocompatible adduct, a polymer to be formed from the zwitterion, and a coating process and composition comprising the adduct or polymer produced therefrom. SOLUTION: The zwitterion includes the adduct of formula (I) wherein Z is a zwitterionic group; X is an electron withdrawing group selected from the group consisting of a carbonyl group, a sulfone group, sulfonium salt and phosphonium salt; R is a difunctional organic group; A is O or NR<SP>6</SP>; R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>2</SP>are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and a 1C-6C alkyl group; R<SP>3</SP>is hydrogen or an organic group; R<SP>4</SP>is an organic group, preferably, an optionally substituted alkyl group, an organopolysiloxane group, an organosilyl group or oligo alkoxyalkyl group.
